Nancy Drew: Nature Photographer

I recently took a trip to Florida with the American Culture Program. We had a great time, and I took about a million photos. I think you'll agree that it's time for me to quit my job and become a nature photographer.

These are from Celebration, FL. It's a pretty little suburb, but still a suburb.

These are from the Okefenokee Swamp, which was my favorite part of the trip. It really felt like we were on an alien planet.

Sunshine

I love sunshine. I just needed to share that. Weather in Denver has been in the 80's and it's just gorgeous. The endless sunshine in Palo Alto (w/ the exception of El Nino my first year there) was one of the best things about going to school there.

Even when everything else seems crappy, it's easier to deal w/ when there is sunshine and warmth around you. And then you can do fun things like sit at the porch of the Keg (house) and chat and make your peace with the world (or at least make fun of it)

Food Review: Baby Pineapple

The other day, I was walking through the grocery store and saw baby pineapple. They were so cute, and I love pineapple so much, I just had to get one. It was about 6 " tall and it smelled sweet and pineappley. Yum!

Sadly, by the time I was done cutting the rind off, there were only about 5 edible bites of pineapple. And it was kind of bitter and odd tasting. Not as sweet and juicy as I had hoped.

So the moral of the story is: baby pineapples are cute to look at, and would make good decorations for a tikki-themed party, but not really worth it for the eats.

The Warriors

This weekend, on a recommendation from a friend, I watched the 1979 movie The Warriors. I think it is now my favorite movie ever.

The plot: After a major gang leader is killed at a giant gang summit in NYC, The Warriors have to fight their way back to Coney Island through the treacherous New York streets and subways.

One of the best things about this movie is the costuming. The gangs all wear these outrageous outfits, like the Purple Lame Vest Gang (actually called the Boppers) and the Zombie Baseball Player Gang (called the Furies). I mean seriously. Who has a rumble in purple lame?

I also love the acting in the movie. The gang members all kind of talk like Shakespearean actors. Particularly the assassinated gang leader (before he dies, of course). He sounds more like he's reading Hamlet than rallying a bunch of thugs to take over the city.

Most of you know, I am a total wimp about violence in movies. This movie has quite a bit of fighting in it, but almost no blood. It's kind of like an episode of the Batman TV show. Choreographed fight scenes where a good punch in the stomach or body-throw across the room will incapacitate the enemy and allow the hero to escape. Super fun.

So my advice to you: buy, rent or Netflix The Warriors ASAP. You won't be sorry. And you might be inspired to update your wardrobe with some purple lame.
